Hello everyone!
Let me take a moment to apologize for the organization, or lack thereof, in YUMAI in the past year. It took a slight break, as the leadership of the group has been going through our freshman year in high school and the transition created difficulties our abilities to get together, plan meetings, or coordinate activities. It has been a while, but YUMAI will be trying to continue developing and build an even stronger movement in the next few years! Currently, I am working to get the plans in place for a new group of leaders, meetings, and campaigns, and the most important part right now is finding people. I'm looking for people who are passionate, willing to be leaders, and spend time over the summer working with me to plan and facilitate meetings and campaigns. If you are based in Mt. Olive and interesting in taking a leadership role in YUMAI this summer, please contact me, through my email: [email protected], or give me a call! If you have absolutely any questions, feel free to send me an email anytime!

Three members of the POD team went down to Peter Jacob's office this Friday, to talk about the Fix Democracy Campaign, and have him sign the pledge. He has pledged to not accept money from fossil fuel interests, support voting rights, and work for the people, not the biggest donors. We really enjoyed discussing some of the issues that are important to us as youth, and hearing about what Peter Jacob is planning to do about it. He is a supporter of the 'We The People Amendment', a resolution that will establish that money is not free speech and artificial entities such as corporations do not have constitutional rights. You can find out more about what Peter Jacob is doing on his website, http://www.peterforcongress.com/, and get involved with his campaign! Be sure to leave any comments and thoughts below!
Thank you everyone for following along and bearing with us while we arrange all of this! Our summer training, from the last post, is actually going to have to be postponed until later in the summer, so around August/September time. We might be cancelling the August 23rd meeting, so just check back for any updates! If you'd like to be a part of our email group, just send an email to [email protected] and you will get the latest updates sent to you! Once again, thanks for your excellent cooperation and enjoy the beautiful weather!
Before we get into the excitement, I hope everyone has been enjoying the beautiful summer! We have a lot planned this summer, so we hope everyone can join in and have a great time!
First, one of our meetings, June 12th has been cancelled, because most of the POD team members will not be in the area. Okay, now for the big news: we are having Isabelle from Greenpeace come in and lead a three day training in June! We are still planning the details, but here's a general outline of what's going to happen. Sunday June 24th- A full day of training and activities, possibly a hike, and we are trying to plan this at a fun outdoor venue Monday June 25th- Another day of training and activities, trying to plan for the library, most likely around 11 am-2 pm, break for lunch, then meet again later Tuesday June 26th- A day with an action involved, maybe driving down to Leonard Lance's office, and our monthly meeting from 6:30-8:00 pm We will provide all the specific information for you and your parents as soon as we have it figured out, but if you are available, mark it on your calendars, and email [email protected] if you can make it! We really want to plan this so it can be the most enriching experience, and with the time of all three days, we can create a very interactive agenda and effective activities! Don't be intimidated, we will be starting from very basics and everyone is welcomed, no matter what kind of experience you have. It is just an opportunity to learn and grow and have a great time, so we hope you can all make it! So our screening of Disobedience last Tuesday was really fun, and it was a great experience! Something we learned from the experience: figure out specific details (speaker systems) BEFORE the event! Also, check the school and township calendar! I know many people were busy at concerts that night, and no problem!
Anyone can watch the documentary at this website: http://watchdisobedience.org It was very interesting, to hear the stories of people who have taken action about climate change, and it was surprising how much is at stake! Our discussion after the movie was also fascinating! We learned about connections between different issues, and issues that we may not associate with each other! Overall, thanks to everyone who came, and I hope you enjoyed it! Also, having adults and families was a great new dynamic, so we may have other days where all ages are welcome and encouraged! Documentaries are some of the most effective ways to learn about issues, and to educate people! They use elements of storytelling and compelling visuals to create a captivating narrative, and it works! We will be hosting the screening of the documentary, Disruption, by 350.org, and having some activities and a discussion. There will be light vegan refreshments as well. This event is hosted by youth leaders, and we are inviting everyone from YUMAI, but we are also inviting anyone, any age, who is interested in coming in and watching with us! Please share this with your friends, family, peers, and everyone you know! Posters will be put up at the library, and the middle school as well! It will be a very fun night, and everyone will learn a lot about the movements that are going on and what civil disobedience means. On another note, our summer meeting dates have been announced on the home page, and they will be every other week, in the heritage room! Any members who are looking to get involved or stay updated can check the member info page too! Have a wonderful week! (Our thunderclap will be announced on Wednesday or Thursday, so remember to check back in)
Not many people made it out to our meeting this month, so here's what happened:
#pomegranate So, if you've been to our meetings, you know that we love to have activities that bring us together as a team! These are really fun, but you might be wondering when we are actually going to take action. Well, we are planning a few exciting things that we will get right into for our next meeting! We are still working on our fix democracy campaign with Greenpeace, and reaching out to our congressman Leonard Lance to have him sign the pledge to prove that he works for the people, by rejecting fossil fuel money. The next step, which we'll be taking at our next meeting, is creating an inspiring, personal video, and sharing it like crazy! Come to the meeting, and you can help us so much! Another thing we're doing is planning a documentary screening for the documentary, Disobedience by 350.org, and you can help out by helping us put the event together! There are so many details to decide and we need your opinions and viewpoint! The last thing is a tree planting, which we are making progress on, slowly but surely. There is so much to do, and we are going to get right into it!
